I'm trying to figure out how to go full time with my freelance graphic design work. I'm just not sure if it's a good idea or not in the current economy.

Anyone have any thoughts/advice? Would it be better to hold on to the full time job until the economy takes a turn?

I say hold on to the current job and do freelance on the side. Keep growing the freelance business until it makes doing your day job impossible. I think that`s a good indicator that you can make a safe transition from one model into another. Is it possible to find other freelancers who stay really busy? Maybe the could give you some scraps when they`re at 100?

Yeah that's kind of what I've been thinking too. It's just tough to build up the freelance work when you're working full-time. But in the end I think you're right...that's probably the best way to go.

I hope you fail so you are forced to work full-time with mySomeday.com, llc. Is that wrong?

hahaha probably, yes. I`m actually supposed to have an interview soon with a new much better ad agency...you`ll have to pray that doesn`t work out well too.

I`ve been doing graphic design work for many (many) years. Even when the economy was in good shape I have found that most of us only make part-time money even when working full-time freelance. Unless you have a spouse whose job provides health insurance, it`s extremely hard to make ends meet freelancing.

Joe and I are actually kind of doing this right now. He started doing things on the side just because he likes to tinker and figure things out. Not graphic design, he has no aesthetic tendencies, but with affiliate marketing. I`d been working part time and trying to get my art career off the ground. Well, life got in the way and he got a new job that`s had us move. But his little side project - after just 1.5 years, is now paying a full-time salary for me, and it is growing faster than our wildest imaginations. Our goal is now to make it big enough so that we can incorporate as a banana republic and own a plantation somewhere in the caribbean. Ha.

But honestly, I would say work on the side, build a network, bide your time, save your money. You will eventually find a point where you have built enough of a reputation for yourself and have enough of a network that you may be able to start your own agency. I know there are several graphic design agencies in Houston that do very well. This may not be the time to go it alone completely, but there will come a point when you can take the leap.

I`ve actually just gotten a pretty great freelance client that`s given me a few jobs to work on. Seems as though they might turn into a regular client. I`ve also found some friends to move in with (two of whom are graphic designers) which has resulted in my rent being cut in half. I think with the newfound low overhead and maybe one or two more semi-steady clients I might be well on my way to going freelance or at least dropping down to part-time at my day job.

Hey ATN, thanks for the advice, I`m usually pretty wary of getting clients through third party vendors like that, though I supposed any money is good money when you first go out on your own haha.

I`ll look around and let you all know if I find some other places like HIT that might have a better reputation.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
