This is definitely a thread that will find some responses at some point. I know a lot of people that are thinking about the same thing. I'll get them to sign up and respond.

I definitely agree with globehound...in fact, my aunt is currently in the process of publishing her second book...I'll get her to sign up as well.

I used to work as a receptionist at Penguin publishing company. I`d often get calls from publishing hopefuls... I always had to tell them, "I`m sorry, but we don`t accept any unsolicited manuscripts. You need to have a literary agent." (I once had someone ask me what `literary` meant and how to spell it. So I guess the policy was there for good reason.) So maybe a good thing to do would be to call publishing companies that you are interested in and ask if they accept unsolicited manuscripts. Occasionally some imprints (like a record label, but for book publishing) do (some of the children`s imprints did at Penguin), and I`m guessing smaller publishing companies might. If you want to go big time, then I guess you could look for literary agencies that accept unsolicited manuscripts.

Here`s a really great site for aspiring writers: http://dailyroutines.typepad.com/

Authors are briefly interviewed and talk about their routines...

There is lots of information on the web if you want to write a book. The first step is to write said book. Now, have you considered self-publishing? Why wait to be discovered? YOu can self-publish and sell your book yourself. If it does well, you can then shop it to agents and publishers.

I saw this story on NPR the other day (thanks to Becs) about a self service machine that let`s you print a library quality paperback book for about 1 penny a page. Check it out here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104644575

I also found a video of the process on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q946sfGLxm4

Seems like a really nice way to get started...you could print a few copies of your book here on the cheap and get local bookstores to carry them. I think you can even add your text to the library featured in the machine with the owners` permission. Very very cool stuff.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
