Someday I'm going to:
Ride in a hunt. by: lexasaur
I`m of the opinion that riding in a hunt is the highest point of exercising a skill for fun that exists in equestrian sportage. I would never have time to compete, but hunting there is a sense of purpose beyond simply `riding`.

  • img_to start at the basics, you have to be able to tack up a horse. this means understanding all the equipment and how it fits; if you don`t tighten the girth correctly, the saddle could slide to the side and throw you under its legs. you would also need to know how to warm up and cool down (animals require this like people do when they work out), and how to clean up afterwards. it may not sound like much, but there`s a lot of upkeep when the biggest part of your sport is another living thing.

  • img_ learn to walk. (english) posture; for english, that`s how to hold your reigns (three fingers), heels down, back straight. control; to steer your 1000lb animal, you have to learn to direct the front of it`s body with the reigns, and the back with your legs. a simple pull on the reigns in the direction you want to go controls the head, and to control the back end you would use leg pressure (the direction you push is the direction the butt goes!). also as far as control goes, you always look to where you want to go; like soccer, its not about looking at the ball, its about looking where you want to put it. relaxing; it sounds dumb, but as someone who`s only 5`2", being that high off the ground with nothing but a mane to grab onto is difficult. and a horse is an animal that "does not reason"; it will feel you tense up, and then it will tense up, and then you have lost control and dangerous things can happen. you have to learn to breathe, and remember the way you react directs the animal beneath you.

  • img_ learn to trot. (english) posting the trot; in english riding when you trot, you post. a trot is a two-beat movement, meaning you can distinctly hear the footfalls in a `one-two-one-two` pattern. to post, you would rise on one, and fall on two. your butt should only lightly touch the saddle, not slam down (poor horse). learning digonals; after posting, you would learn diagonals. this means that when you are up out of the seat is when the horses` outside shoulder is forward sitting the trot; this provides much more control, and is something i cannot do!

zachwashere(1049 Days ago)Very very thorough, I`m very impressed...do they have this kind of thing in the Jersey? Do you actually hunt and kill an animal or is it more humane than that?Flag as Inappropriate

Becs(995 Days ago)I love this Someday! I rode when I was growing up but I`ve never actually done a proper hunt. That would be so much fun! I am trying to get back into riding and I recently found out about a barn in Prospect Park called Kensington Stables. I haven`t been yet but it might be an option for you to continue your training...the website is below:

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
