Someday I'm going to:
Cycle to Work in NYC by: globehound
I`d like to be part of the move to make NYC a more bike-friendly city as well as contribute to my overall health. And I get to ride over the beatiful Brooklyn Bridge every morning, something I consider a great fringe benefit.

  • img_ buy a new bike. i was considering getting a use one but decided that buying a new bike would make me feel more invested and give me further motivation to stick with commuting. i also like that most bike shops offer adjustments/tune-ups for free for some period of time. will probably save me money in the long run. i ended up buying the cannondale quick 5.

  • img_ plan a route to work. i`m going to ride across the brooklyn bridge and then either take the east river or hudson river path up to the 40s. there are a bunch of alternative routes. http://www.nycbikemaps.com is a great resource for seeing all of the new bike roads/paths in nyc.

  • img_ buy a good lock. in addition to getting a good lock, i ended up getting these skewers for the tires and bike seat. they cost $60 but it prevents thieves from removing any of these parts because an odd-shaped key is required to twist the pieces off. there are literally 200 different shaped keys so the likelihood of bike thieves having and then trying 200 keys is slim to none. ultimately its a great deterrent.

update 10/20: took my first ride to work today. no issues, took manhattan bridge and shot right up 6th avenue. took me about 30 mins and got a great workout.

A4S4L4(324 Days ago)I started riding my bike around Chicago the past 6 months or so for my dog-walking route. It definitely took some getting used to, but once I gained more and more confidence riding side by side with cars, it changed my life. Love being on my bike!
(Don`t forget to buy/wear a helmet!)

JackieG(324 Days ago)Check out http://www.recycleabicycle.org/ for a used bike. Bike sales support youth outreach and programming. I`ve been there and liked how their bike sales which help support the community. Also the best time to buy a bike is the fall months as people try to get ride of them after the summer. Good luck.Flag as Inappropriate

Elle(282 Days ago)Learn how to clean and maintain a bike?? Come on, these seems to be relatively easy compared to the actual pedaling you are doing up hill on the Brooklyn Bridge! Get it together and complete this plan!!!Flag as Inappropriate

globehound(253 Days ago)Agreed. I should just bring the bike to the shop this weekend and get the 15-minute primer on changing flats and making minor adjustments and I can reach the Spotlight On section. Thanks for the encouragement.Flag as Inappropriate

kareem.johnson(237 Days ago)I`m getting started biking myself. But St. Louis, (Like NYC from what I hear, keeps getting snowed on), which is slowing me down. I`m a fairly new cyclist, so I`m not used to traffic, yet.Flag as Inappropriate

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
