Someday I'm going to:
Finish My First Screenplay by: globehound
I finished a rough draft 3 years ago and then got sidetracked. I`m giving myself until May 2011 to finalize it.

JoeSomebody2(447 Days ago)This May is quite a close deadline. You giving yourself plenty of time to work with? I suppose it is, given the fact we are talking about something that`s been planned out 3 years ago, but...less than 2 months! :oFlag as Inappropriate

jslsurf(433 Days ago)Globe,

I started a writer`s group with a few of my friends from college. We have a monthly submission deadline and then the following week we get together to critique each other`s work. The one element that I don`t see on your list is a commitment to spend a specific number of minutes or hours each day or week writing. There is not substitute for spending time at your computer with the phone and internet OFF on a regular basis. All successful artists, writers, etc., set aside time when they worked at their craft and they didn`t let anyone or anything bother them. This could be the 1/2 hour to and from work on the train John LeCarre dedicated to writing in his early days, to the hours from 4:00AM to 8:00 AM that Paul Bowels set aside, to the 4 hours a day the Beatles set aside to writing songs. All these people guarded their creative time jealously.

You don`t need to buy expensive screen-writing software, especially if you are just starting out. Screenplays aren`t that hard to format, and what formatting there is is rather flexible. Standard word-processing programs will give you all the formatting tools you need. Also, a lot of people in the industry don`t even use them, so there`s the problem with collaborating with other writers, directors, etc.

Take a look at the screenplay for Rocky and the screenplay for Three Kings. You can find them for free on the web. Both are fine examples of the art. Both are rather different. Rocky is very straight-forward. It`s all about the action and the dialogue, so it`s written in master scenes. Three Kings derives a lot of it`s humor by the way the story is told, so there are a lot of visual devices, flash back, weird cuts, etc. That`s hard to convey in a script. As a first-time writer, it`s better for you to stick to the Rocky format than the Three Kings format.

Good luck!

JoeSomebody2(416 Days ago)Hollywood is in the business of remaking and rehashing old movies. Take for example Funny Games, an Austrian film of 1997 remade in 2008 for American audiences. Shot for shot. Why such a waste of time and money? Show the industry that something new can be given to the public. ;)Flag as Inappropriate

jslsurf(383 Days ago)Dear Globe,

I see your someday is featured this week. Good going!

I also see that your deadline is sometime this month. How`s it going? I`ve blown a deadline on my writting project, but I`m getting back on the horse today. Saddle up and ride with me, partner!

globehound(383 Days ago)Hey Surf,

I`m pushing this one back a bit. My sole focus is to compete in amateur golf tournaments and i`m devoting nearly all of my time to this end. Will likely re-commit to writing once weather turns cold.

Thanks for the nudge though and good luck riding that horse.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
