I shoot with an SLR (Canon 20D with L Series Lens). Although my composition is good, I sometimes have issues with focus. I shoot in Program/Apeture Value/Shutter value manual modes all of which have auto-focus at work. I`m just wondering if any photographers have any tips regarding how they typically get good focus. Perhaps its as simple as setting auto-focus to a single spot method?

Focus. Compose. Fire.

I shoot with a similar setup and I find that the camera likes to focus on the background. For example. If a person is standing in front of a wall and the focus point is on the person the camera sometimes decides to put the focus on the wall in the background. This is especially true with wide lenses.
The camera you are using has 9 auto focus points but the center point is the only one that really works. At least that is what I have experienced. The others are not very accurate and take their sweet time to find focus.
Another issue is back lit scenes. The camera just can`t focus when the background is brighter. Shooting against the sun usually throws the auto focus off.

Try playing with the auto focus mode. There are three options.

AI Focus: automatically selects either of the two other focus modes
AI Servo: keeps the focus active to track moving subjects
ONE SHOT: the camera locks and holds the focus for you to compose still subjects

I have never tried AI Focus since I do not want the camera to decide for me where the focus should be. The AI Servo is good for fast moving subjects where you follow them with the camera. The one I use 99% of the time is ONE SHOT. You simply set the focus point on your subject to focus and then you hold the focus down and recompose the scene. After a while this gets really fast. Focus. Compose. Fire.

This is incredibly helpful. I`m going to adjust the camera so it has one focus point and One Shot mode. Sounds like if I make these adjustments I`ll have a lot more control over the focus which is what I want.
