I've always wanted to find out more about combining travel with volunteerism. Anyone have any ideas or experience?

You mean different than Habitat for Humanity? Isn't that similar to what you are talking about? Helping in a different location....let's go build some houses in the states! I haven't been to all 50.....we can go build in Hawaii!

My friend is going to Africa to document her friends charity that gives out mosquito nets in a few months...I probably couldn't be more jealous...

Wow, that sounds amazing. Is her friend doing this as part of an organization or is it just an individual effort?

It`s a combination of both.

My former boss was given a piece of land in Tanzania as a wedding gift totally normal, and she`s using it to build a floating health clinic there which is currently underway: http:laketanganyikafhc.org

As part of that organization she`s starting, as well as her personal interest in the country, we are going there for the month of April to distribute 50,000+ bed nets to 35 different villages throughout Tanzania for World Malaria Day 425. She`s taking me along to both photograph the distribution, as well as keep her son who I used to nanny on top of his studieshomework.

So, right now, it kind of is an individual effort because she`s pretty much funding all of this through her own inherited wealth, but eventually, once the clinic starts up, hopefully she`ll receive funding through the donors to her organization.

As far as the volunteerism part, I`m sure once the clinic`s officially functioning, they`ll need volunteers to run it and do similar distributions. I can definitely keep you posted whenever there is more to report.

Zach, trust me, if I had any say in the matter, I would invite you in a heartbeat.

I visited Tanzania a few years ago purely for leisure. We actually went to lake tanganyika, its all really beautiful. You should take a few days and actually go on safari, its truly unforgettable.

If I have any say over my time there, that would be my dream.
Unfortunately, I anticipate

The good news, though, is that part of my duties there involve hanging out with my former employer`s son and helping him with his homework. He goes to a crazy private school the high school linked to U of Chicago and all his teachers are planning interdisciplinary lessons, so that he can take advantage of his time there to aide in his lessons.
And I said he and I could do a photo project. He knows how much I am dying to see a giraffe in its natural habitat, so I`m crossing my fingers that one of our activities includes a safari.

Good to hear that you liked it there.

Liked would be an understatement. Its really incredible. I've traveled a lot and the combination of the atmosphere and the wildlife in the Serengeti is really unmatched. Its hard to believe until you're actually there and seeing it with your own eyes.

I can only imagine. The kid well, teenager I`m in charge of while I`m there wanted to show me a bunch of his pictures from last time he was there. At first I resisted because I want to see everything with my own eyes, but then he showed me an amazing picture of giraffes walking along the horizon and another one of a cheetah, and I got so excited.

Thank you for getting me even more excited about this than I thought was possible.

p.s. I just realized my last comment had an incomplete sentence...I guess the end would be `...the opposite, but still a once in a lifetime experience`

I highly recommend it...

One of the best experiences I ever had was spending a summer volunteering as a health worker in remote villages in the Andes Mountains in South America. I built latrines for rural families, taught dental hygiene to children in the schools, and educated the community on oral rehydration therapy during a cholera epidemic.

The nonprofit is called Amigos De Las Americas (or "Los Amigos" for short). It`s part of the World Health Organization and an amazing travel - volunteer program to become a part of.

When I was in Costa Rica, I went to this great animal rescue center (the link is below). You can go there, stay with them, learn Spanish for 4 hours/day, help them build enclosures for the animals, and take care of the animals (sloths! monkeys!), all for a nominal cost.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
