Someday I'm going to: Support Microenterprise to End Extreme Poverty
Support Microenterprise to End Extreme Poverty
This is our plan
Original plan by: Trickle Up
  • Step 1: Target Regions. To help people move out of extreme poverty, the first step is in identifying the regions that are in most need. With our field staff based in each region, we work to select the poorest areas in our countries of operation in order to devote resources to the communities where we can make the most impact and deliver sustainable changes.

  • Step 2: Build Local Partnerships. In order to increase our capacity to serve the very poorest, we establish partnerships with local community-based organizations. This allows us to specifically adapt programs to local communities, where our partners have long worked but lacked the expertise to effectively and sustainably reach the very poorest people in those communities.

  • Step 3: Implement Poverty Targeting. We train our partners in poverty targeting methods, through which we can identify the poorest households in each community. A majority of Trickle Up participants are women or people with disabilities, two groups that often face discrimination and limited economic opportunity, and as a result comprise a large percentage of the world’s poorest.

  • Step 4: Distribute Seed Capital Grants. Key to the Trickle Up intervention is the distribution of seed capital grants to our participants. This seed capital grant is the initial mechanism in helping participants start or expand a microenterprise. The seed capital grant is only the beginning in a chain of establishing long-term economic stability efforts.

  • Step 5: Provide Training. We train participants to manage their microenterprises and the new income they earn from their activities. For example, if a participant decides to raise goats, she will receive training in basic veterinary practices to ensure that she can raise healthy goats and their kids. Or if a participant chooses to buy and sell stocks of dry goods, she will receive training in basic bookkeeping to price her wares competitively in the market.

  • Step 6: Establish Savings Groups. It is often the case that many of our participants have very little knowledge of the power simple saving delivers. This important component of our program connects participants with savings groups that help them build assets and leads them to additional sources of finance. These groups provide a way for participants to save collectively and also borrow from the group, providing stability in times of need.

  • Step 7: Continuing Support. Ensuring the sustainability of our program and our participants’ journey out of poverty is critical to success. The Trickle Up model is specifically designed to ensure that participants continue to benefit from training and expanded access to capital even at the end of the Trickle Up intervention: our partners, whom we train to deliver our model, are locally based and continue to work with Trickle Up participants for years after our intervention is complete. In some regions, savings groups started more than 10 years ago are still meeting regularly today.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
