Step 1: Locate Villages with a Need for Clean Water. We work with 11 local organizations in Africa to identify villages throughout Malawi, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cote D’Ivoire that are especially in need of a clean and safe water supply. Instead of working or attending school, many people from these villages, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to collect water. On this journey, they face greater risk of sexual harassment and assault but they have no choice. In many cases, the water they collect is from unsafe sources and so when they return this same water is likely to make them sick. Children are especially vulnerable to the consequences of unsafe water. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water, 90% are children under 5-years-old.
Step 2: Decide on the Type of Water Project. We work with our implementing partners to decide, based on the geology of the land, what type of water projet would provided the greatest benefit to the community and the most sustained supply of clean and safe water. Whether it’s a well, a borehole, a rainwater catchment, a biosand filter, or spring protection, we make sure that clean and safe water is the end result.
Step 3: Establish a Water Committee. Each community elects a water committee that is responsible for various aspects of the Water Project. This committee generally consists of 6-8 people, half of which are women. Where hospitals are involved, the committee will generally consist of hospital staff and where schools are involved, the committee is usually comprised of the school administration or members of the PTA.
Step 4: Install the Water Project. The local community is fully engaged in the building process, carrying out small tasks to reduce labor costs. This community participation ensures a sense of true ownership once the project is complete. After completion, we test the water to ensure that it is of high-quality and safe and free of contaminants.
Step 5: Turn the ‘Faucet’ On and Change the Future. Once water starts running from a well it will provide clean and safe water for 20 years. The prospects for good health dramatically increase with access to clean and safe water. We also encourage hygiene and sanitation education which drastically reduces water-related disease. The women and children now spend less time collecting water, enabling them to go to school or earn an income. Helping to provide this essential ingredient of life can have a powerful impact on the future of both the individuals and the villages they inhabit. Water changes everything.

I had the opportunity to assist with the installation of a rain-water gathering cistern in a Twa village in the mountains of Burundi. There are plenty of legitimate organizations doing wonderful things and the cause is far more than worthwhile, it`s essential for those in need.Flag as Inappropriate
