A Conversation with A4S4L4.
A4S4L4 thought that it was essential for holocaust survivors to pass down an oral history of their experience to the next generation. And so she made it happen.MSD: What made you decide to do this?
A4S4L4: I`ve always been inspired by the stories of Holocaust survivors and five years ago, I was given the unique opportunity to part of a test program to regularly meet with a Holocaust survivor. I met with him weekly, and even though I moved out of NY, he and I have kept in touch ever since then. I always regretted not recording his story of survival. Initially, he preferred that I not record him, so I was only able to take notes with a pen and paper. Now he`s in his mid-80`s and he agreed to allow me to really document his story so it lives on.

MSD: Did you find any of the Steps particularly challenging? If so, how did you overcome the obstacle(s)?
A4S4L4: I would say the first meeting was the most difficult part for me. Its not easy to imagine or to listen to some of the stories. But I knew it was important for him to be able to share and also for me to hear the stories.

MSD: Any general advice or tips you`d like to share?
A4S4L4: The Holocaust is a pretty sensitive subject with the surviving population, each individual may approach being recorded differently, so make sure you ask before you do any audio/video recording.

MSD: What`s the next Someday you plan to make a reality?
A4S4L4: Actually, as an extension of this Someday, I`d like to combine the audio recordings, the writing and the photographs to create some kind of multimedia installation art/informational piece of work. As a further extension, I`d like to volunteer or work for the Shoah Foundation someday.

From his talk, I learned how things are twisted and concealed from public.
It is really essential to pass down the truth and what you have done is really meaningful.

It`s impossible to ever doubt this atrocity occurred when you look into the eyes of a survivor.
But pretty soon there won`t be any left, so it`s absolutely vital that all of their stories get recorded one way or another.
