I am trying to familiarise myself with contemporary fiction and the various publishing houses etc by reading the Booker prize longlist before the prize is announced. I am a very slow reader due to my difficulties with concentration, so this is tough!

GavBelcher(163 Days ago)Finished Adam Foulds` The Quickening Maze today. I personally was no great fan of it. For me the characters didn`t come alive. There were so many scenes that should have been disturbing, or touching which remained flat. John Clare`s florid mania was not, for me, brought to life at all. All we see is the facts of it. He is John Clare now, a prize fighter now, Lord Byron now, but it just didn`t come alive. This book, as far as I`m concerned, gives credence to those who believe that literary fiction such as wins the top prizes is simply another genre with a template of its own.Flag as Inappropriate

GavBelcher(126 Days ago)I`m on set to read the short list by tomorrow, which is good enough considering. I`m struggling with Wolf Hall, and have been now for some time. I am on the last sixty pages or so, and it has been dragging for about 400 to tell the truth. I ended up reading it with A S Byatt`s prolixious The Children`s Book. I haven`t found a book so utterly putdownable for years.Flag as Inappropriate

GavBelcher(123 Days ago)Finished the shortlist by the morning of the 6th, the day it was announced. It was something of a disappointment that the Booker got so little coverage on the night, with a philistine piece on the BBC about how the books are invariably so literary and convoluted it`s amazing to think that anybody would want to read them. I wasn`t too sure about the winner either. I think it`ll make a great audiobook once it`s abridged (I normally listen only to unabridged audiobooks but I would make an exception in this instance). Still, I got through a fair chunk of the longlist and all of the shortlist so I did ok.Flag as Inappropriate
