Someday I'm going to:
publish a novel. by: Foster
I do enjoy writing, and I`ve started a number of both shorter fictions and longer ones, always with the hopes of one day getting one or more completed and sent off to some NYC publication agent... but it`s a daunting endeavor, at least, for me.

  • img_finish a compelling story! i`ve started a number that i like... or did like, at least initially, until i got bogged down in trying to propel the plot forward, and usually ended up steeped in theory or philosophy or some other non-narrative literary exploration which, however much i enjoy writing, probably isn`t the most saleable of novels.

the effort required is indicative of my experience; should another pursue the same, i hope you find it easier.

  • img_edit. this is a somewhat ongoing procedure for me. however, it never fails that when i re-read something i`ve written, i find a missing word, rather an incoherency due to a missing word which i then insert, a typo, or some other infuriating detail out of sorts. sure there are people who are higher up in the process who do this sort of thing, but it`s only professional to present the best product you can when seeking representation for it.

the difficulty here is in the tedium. a willing reader (or a few) would help since it`s often the case that you`ll unconsciously fill in and auto-correct your own work if it`s fresh in your thoughts.

  • img_ from here on out, i`m in unknown territory. with a solid finished product, i need to find a literary agent, or shop the product to publishing companies, but skipping the agent step makes getting a foot in the door substantially more difficult. i imagine this takes time, patience, communication, presentation, a little luck, and a substantial shipping/correspondence budget. i`m sure the web makes this a little easier... but i think it`s pretty fruitless to look into it before there`s a finished product. more details and steps to come... first there`s writing to do...

jslsurf(778 Days ago)Dear Foster,

I understand what you are going through, because I torture myself ina much the same way, but I encourage you to loosen up and try to have fun with it. Good writting takes work, and sometimes you have to bang your head against the wall, but if it`s all one endless purgatory of doubt and stress and tedium, then you should take a step back and evaluate what you`re doing. Try to remember the thing that made you really WANT to write the story. If you`re not enjoying it, if you`re not feelng a sense of accomplishment when you make progress, than you`re doing something wrong. Maybe you should change your list to include the things that really excite you about this project like sharing it with somebody, or finding out new things.

Charlie Kaufman, who wrote the script for "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," cautions writers not to be afraid to write themselves into corners. He looks at writing as an act of self-discovery. If you plot out the whole thing before you get going, or stop to dot every "i" and cross every "t," you give up the possilility that the story might take you in a different direction than the one you intended at the start, or reveal to you that a certain character is actually the center of your story. Nobody has to know that the final version isn`t what you set out to create.

On another note, Michael Chabon wrote TWO entire novels, each one over 700 pages long, which he had to scrap. After each one, he wrote a new novel, which became a best seller "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" and "The Jewish Policemen`s Union." I myself have scrapped several screenplays and one novel after finishing the whole thing or making a pretty good start. I don`t reccomend this approach, but next time you have to scrap a few pages or even a whole chapter, you can think to yourself, "Well, at least I didn`t have to trash 700 pages like Michael Chabon.

Finally, what`s wrong with writting a good work of non fiction? If your ideas are entertaining, there is a market for them. Maybe you should just go with it next time.

Good luck!

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
