I just wanted to put a thread out and offer my limited experience on the subject as a former Equinox (Crunch, Gold`s) certified personal trainer.

The first step of any weight-loss program is creating a deficit in your caloric intake. To lose weight you must be consuming less calories than you`re burning on a daily basis. This can be accomplished by eating less, doing more, or both, but the deficit must exist.

For ideas in and out of the gym, we can all share our successes and failures... but hopefully more our successes. Cheers.

I`ve been working on building my upper body strength with pushups (you can check out my plan on my profile). I`ve also starting walking to and from work everyday and I`ve started to make a concerted effort to eat much healthier and i`m definitely noticing the difference.

Also, I posted about places to go swimming in another chit chat thread; I`d love to do more of that since I pretty much hate all other cardio workouts....anyone who knows of good pools in Manhattan please share!

Do you have a good Plan that you can offer up? Perhaps you can add a Someday entitled `Lose Weight` and then offer up some specific Steps. If you toggle all the buttons green, it will show that you`ve already achieved this Someday and others can then benefit from your expertise.

I feel like I`d be a little dishonest to put up a weight loss plan. I`ve always been the skinny guy who wanted to be bigger and had to learn to be content with being the smaller guy in the gym. Still, I was thinking of the benefits of just having a thread for the principals of weight-loss, fitness, a healthy balanced diet, etc. that all (especially those better versed in other areas than I) could amass and trade information of what works, what doesn`t, or where to find what works, as well as perhaps a little why, how, and whatever else seems worthwhile.

As far as maximizing effort, I`d say the principles of any given plan are pretty universal for men and/or women, and more specific to the goal, be it weight loss or muscle growth, as any aesthetic regimen usually falls into one or the other. What is healthy could be something altogether different, as well as training for a specific function or event or pastime.

A good plan always come down to the goal. It should be SMART (Simple, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-oriented, as the acronym goes... If I recall, though I always found A and R a little redundant) and usually, specific knowledge will only help. There are still droves of controversies in the fitness industry, but most standard advice has solid scientific evidence to back it up as far as what is beneficial, why, how, etc. though opinions will differ.

I`ll ramble soon, if I`m not already, which is another reason I think specific questions are easier to deal with, as per experience, and proven clinical successes. I`ll post my goals and plans accordingly, but feel they should be mine.

Cheers!

Good points. I`m aiming to get back to P90X this year. Tried last year, very minor injury prevented me from finishing.

I just had a hysterectomy in April `09. The plus has been feeling so much better and not having to worry about the cancer coming back. The problem is that I was getting in great shape before the surgery and could ride my bike 4 miles a day and still come home and do all the things I needed to. The down side of the whole thing has been that in the 10 months that I was so sick and then had surgery I seem to have lost every bit of the "in-shape-ness" I had. My doc says to go slow in rebuilding but I don`t even know where to start. Especially since I still get swollen if I overdo it at all. I could use some ideas. I have to rebuild my core ab muscles but I have to be careful doing it. The upper abs are healing fine because the incisions went with the grain of the muscle but the underneath ab muscles were sliced up pretty badly. My doc told me that I should realize that I was stabbed in the stomach 4 times and that even though the surgeon was careful he still had to do some serious damage to the muscles.
So my questions is... where do i start? How do I start?

You`d definitely want to follow all of your physician`s advice before a Personal Trainer`s [ie: mine], and my first recommendation would be to go to some manner of physio-therapy if it`s within your limitations to do so. However if you have been cleared and if you`re able to find a good trainer at a local gym there are definitely advantages to having a well-trained trainer assist you in building up a program and tweaking it every few months.
Basic core stabilization is huge. My first caveat would be to ignore the "no pain no gain" adage and if it hurts, don`t do it until you get more info from your doctor. Some initial basic exercises you can do anywhere would be a some basic plyometrics, basic body-weight movements like squats and lunges and [modified, ie: wall] push-ups, and (reverse) curl-ups/crunches and the like. If you`re familiar with kegels they`re easy, invisible, can be done anywhere for countless repetitions a day and are great at building up that interior core musculature in and around the pelvic wall. Planks and other isometric/postural holds can be a good start too; think yoga/pilates/etc. Also, just actively remembering your posture throughout the day and trying to focus on sitting up straight will help you get into the mindset of strengthening that musculature. This would all be in addition to taking stairs, walking more, all those little things mentioned above.
Without knowing what your capacities/limitations are it`s difficult to get anything more specific which is why I would recommend sitting down and speaking to a reputable trainer. The Balance/Yoga/Stability Balls are great and have a lot of versatility for the money you spend on them, though they do take up space. There are workarounds for most (if not all) exercises, as well as ways to make things easier or harder.
Keyword searches will net myriad results, but beware your sources, please, and again, if it doesn`t feel healthy (if it hurts) don`t do it, get assistance. Ultimately, you need only start!
Hope this helps in your pursuits. All the best and Happy New Year!

I`m not limited in what i can do except by my own ability to perform the exercises. I`m cleared to do whatever I need to and can do to get back in shape. I tried doing some exercises but ended up hurting for several days after so haven`t done much except normal things like taking the laundry hamper up and down the stairs a few times a day, walking as much as possible and just trying to keep my posture straight as possible. (That one thing alone is sometimes more than i can take but will keep plugging along with it. ) Thanks for the advice on the modifications. I had forgotten that i can modify everything I do to fit what I can do. I have also gone back to Susan Powter`s videos as they helped when I was severely overweight once before and wanted to get in shape.

Will keep on keepin on and try to remember that i do have a few limitations to work around.

What is mySomeday.com Close
mySomeday is designed to help you achieve those goals and dreams you’ve always said you’d get to ‘Someday’. It was born from a universal truth; everyone has ‘somedays’ they want to realize. It was designed to address a universal reality; life, laziness or lack of know-how makes achievement elusive. ‘Plans’ are meant to address this gap between truth and reality. Whether you build your own original Plan or copy and customize an existing Expert or Community Plan, this detailed roadmap is meant to get you from start to finish. With a Plan, you can track your progress, set reminders and deadlines, get feedback from the community and much more. In addition to Plans, we hope that all of the elements of the site and the social connections that spring up will take people from idea, to plan, to partnership, and, ultimately, to achievement.
