Someday I'm going to:
go to Africa by: A4S4L4
Ever since Okado showed our 3rd grade class a video of him with family in Kenya, I`ve dreamed about going to Africa where the animal kingdom roams free.
This is my plan | 100%

update: i didn`t think i was going to get to do this, but due to a delay in receiving the mosquito nets we were supposed to be distributing, we went on an overnight safari weekend in katavi national park...the smallest game park in existence (they only receive 500 visitors a year). it was an incredible way to experience a safari because we were literally the only ones in the park. we saw a leopard at night, as well as tons of giraffes, hippos, water buffalo, zebras, etc. no elephants or lions, though, so i guess i`ll have to go back some time. darn.

zachwashere(1930 Days ago)This is so cool...I`m so excited for you! You should have a picture viewing party when you get back :)

i`m sure Gallatin would want to publish some of your stuff. I can put you in contact with some people over there I`ve been talking to recently. Lemme know!

A4S4L4(1930 Days ago)Thanks, Zach!
I would love to have a picture viewing party...well depending on the results...maybe I make a slideshow or book to be viewed at the launch party.

That would actually be a huge help (!!!) if you could put me in touch with your Gallatin contacts...any way we could do that in the next day or two?

oyveysherita(1928 Days ago)You should really mention that you`ve actually already been to Africa (Morocco)... and make your someday say like a specific country in Africa or something...

I`m so excited for you!!!!!! :-D

A4S4L4
A4S4L4(1928 Days ago)Yeah, I thought about that, but you`re limited to the number of characters you can write in the description. And although Morocco is one of the most interesting places I`ve been, it`s not the "Africa" that I`ve always wanted to go to, if that makes sense. I guess I could have narrowed it to Kenya bringing it back to Okado or to Tanzania since I know Max has been there before, but I didn`t really care where I went on the continent, as long as it was somewhere that looked like the initial video I saw.

Wish you could come with me...hopefully next time!

A4S4L4(1927 Days ago)Reading this whole page, both of your (zach and sheri) comments included, made me tear up. Thank you for being so encouraging and supportive and inspirational. I will miss you both tremendously while I`m gone.

Zach, yeah, that is one of my all-time favorite pictures. Due to the fact that not only am I apparently having an actual conversation with a baby giraffe, but also my dad is wearing his "never nudes." So funny.

A4S4L4(1885 Days ago)Why thank you. It`s good to be back.
Once I`m not a jet-lagged zombie and have the patience to go through my 3,000+ photos, I will post some of my favorites.
For now, there is a photo of me trying to recreate the baby giraffe picture (minus my dad and his shorts and you can really only see the giraffe if you zoom in) and one of many sunset photos.
Also, I uploaded two short videos from the World Malaria Day celebration.
I`m not sure if I should subject the viewing public to the dance video ;-)

A4S4L4(1880 Days ago)Not that this matters, but in reference to Step 15, I ended up returning "Heart Of Darkness" because it turned out Max had to read "Catcher In The Rye" instead. I was happy to re-read that and it was great reading it along with a boy who`s Holden`s age.Flag as Inappropriate

A4S4L4(1878 Days ago)Thanks, Zach! I have a few more of competing beauty. I`m usually not one to sit and stare at things, I`d rather be doing than thinking, but there was something about this place that slowed everything down, and sitting/staring/thinking did not cause the restlessness I`m used to. And therefore I did things like photograph sunsets.Flag as Inappropriate
Foster
Foster(1878 Days ago)I`m pretty sure Conrad`s "Heart of Darkness" is Public Domain. As for finding animals roaming free in Africa, there are many, but a lot of the heavier populated areas (for wildlife) are reserved as game parks and safaris and are wretchedly expensive. Still I saw some baboons, gators, giraffes, zebra, and monkeys for free... and I`ve elephants aren`t that rare, I just didn`t have the pleasure.
Also, beware the yellow fever shot. It can be uncomfortable for a few days. It`s an amazing experience though!
I guess you went... I hope you enjoyed it!

A4S4L4
A4S4L4(1877 Days ago)I didn`t see an elephants either!! Unbelievable.
My yellow fever shot actually didn`t affect me too negatively as I was expecting. Must work differently on everyone.

And yes, i DID enjoy it (the trip, not the shot)!
Judging by your profile, you are way more of an Africa expert than I am. Do you have a favorite countries of the ones you`ve visited?

A4S4L4(1877 Days ago)Zach, as per your request, I keep attempting to upload the dance video, but it keeps telling me the upload failed. The file is only 69mb, so it fits within the max. requirements. Any suggestions? I got the smaller-sized videos to load fine, though.Flag as Inappropriate
Foster
Foster(1867 Days ago)It`s amazing the diversities and similarities each country showed. I was pretty isolated in Zambia and much of our time was spent in transit the month we were traveling, but we spent a few days in Mpulungu, Zambia at the southernmost tip of Lake Tanganyka, waiting for a boat that wouldn`t take us when it came because it was shuttling Congolese refugees, a few in Morogoro, Tanzania waiting for a train that wouldn`t let us board for two days running, and two weeks in and around Bujumbura, Burundi where we visited an orphanage, a mountain village of the Twa, and spent a night on the lake with some fisherman. Some elements were very similar wherever we stayed, but you could see the changes in infrastructure and the influence of foreign aid the moment you crossed a border. The bus ride from Burundi into Rwanda was like passing through decades in time. Both countries suffered through the same genocidal movement, but Burundi didn`t keep peace long enough to warrant aid, so we crossed from pitted dirt roads to paved and painted streets, civil war-ravaged people to world spotlight posturing citizens, passing from new moon to full moon, but never quite seeing the dawn. It was an interesting, and educational experience.
Glad you enjoyed your own. I`m still toying with trying to teach there for a year or so sometime in the future... after another year or two in SE Asia... and perhaps an MA in between... too many somedays!
